Ashville Teacher browbeats student over being a McCain supporter- UPDATE

November 6th, 2008 at 07:41pm kimberly

Who’s teaching your kids??? Please check with your kids and make sure this is not happening in your schools. She should be fired immediately.

Watch her bully a little girl who dares to answer “McCain” when asked who she supports for president. The child is the daughter of a soldier. Watch the teacher mock the girl and her father (”So that mean yo’ daddy could stay in Iraq for another hundred years!”). Watch the little girl’s eyes well up in tears. Is this the kind of education reform Barack Obama advocates?

Superintendent is investigating:

I was shocked when I saw the clip of an interaction between a Cumberland County Schools teacher and her students as posted on YouTube. While neutral discussion of the political process is appropriate, at no time, particularly with elementary students, should a teacher infuse his/her political views into the discussion. Most disconcerting was the military slant that made its way into this discussion. We are a military community, serving over 15,000 military students and their families. We value the sacrifices, not only of the military parents but also those of their families.

We believe that military children are our children, military spouses are many of our employees, and military service men and women are our heroes. We proudly serve our military children and have received national awards for our support of military families.

I was particularly disturbed to see the uncomfortable position in which our children were placed due to the inappropriate actions of one of our teachers. Please be assured that the actions exhibited in this video are not consistent with the vision of the CCS. Moreover, the actions of one teacher do not represent the 7000 employees in our organization.

Once the video was brought to my attention, I immediately launched an investigation. Personnel laws prevent me from releasing information regarding individual employees and personnel action taken. I can assure you that upon completion of the investigation, I will take appropriate action.

Dr. William Harrison
CCS’ Superintendent

Should she be fired? Yes. Same with the teacher at my child’s school who told the class Governor Palin was a racist.

I would agree with you that the teacher went too far. I also believe very strongly that personal politics don’t belong in the classroom, which is why I’ve never told a student who I vote for (and a lot ask). I also will not say anything negative about our president or any other elected figure. Issues we can discuss, as long as it’s done respectfully.

I also correct students when they repeat lies that are spread about a public figure (Bush is not a drunk, Obama is not a Muslim, McCain didn’t have a black child out of wedlock, etc.) Slme of them can be pretty wild.

Not only did the teacher go too far, she intimidated a young child and imposed her will into the minds of others. Her over zealousness borders on arrogance. Furthermore, this teacher paints a bleak picture of the sometime unpopular reality that war is needed. Teachers need to teach both sides of a situation in order to allow a student to ask questions and grow mentally and civically, rather than force feeding his or her own beliefs and ideologies – and forcing beliefs upon these young and curious minds. If the teacher had been a McCain supporter and used the same tactics, he or she would have been categorized as a monster and possibly fired. This educator crossed the line and her episode is unacceptable and disgusting. I hope this is not the trend of self-importance and recklessness in a time that our country is on a positive track to unity and possible solutions to major problems facing our nation as a whole.

Being a Military mom I am saddened and discusted to think that this woman is teaching anyone at all. How can she get away with saying things like this to children and bringing up John and Jesus <– Who has nothing to do with the siduation at all. But to talk to a Military Child on top of this and say your daddy or it could have been mom that they are voting bad then that he would be away for 100 years What??????? If that was my daughter I am sorry that woman would not be working with for nor with any other children. To think if this poor child 1 hasn’t seen her father in a year by being overseas now OR god forbid that something happen to him and she Never got to see her parent again omg.. Sick just sick what would that woman do then feel sorry that she scared this kid. Sickened

WE MUST BAN TEACHER UNIONS FROM OUR SCHOOLS. THEY MERELY SAVE UNDERPERFORMING TEACHERS AND PREVENT A CHANGE IN TEACHING METHODOLOGY OR DISCIPINE WHILE ALOWING THEM TO EXTRACT MORE TAX DOLLARS FROM HARD WORKING TAXPAYERS AS WELL AS TO INDOCTRINATE OUR CHILDREN TO A SOCIALIST AGENDA. WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE SUPPORT THESE PARASITES
